FAQs: museum safety measures

The museum is now open.

Do I need to book in advance or can I just turn up at the museum?

You can turn up and drop in.  We will be managing visitor flow but we do not envisage anyone having to queue for long to gain access.

Will I need a face mask?

Face masks are no longer mandatory but in line with their advice we do suggest you wear them particularly in spaces with no windows which we can't ventilate.

How will you ensure that visitors are kept at a safe distance from each other?

Once inside there is a one-way sytem to reduce crowding.  Some areas are narrow so we would be grateful if visitors could take special care in those areas, give way to others who are already moving through and use a face covering when appropriate.

Will there be facilities for hand washing and sanitising during the visit?

Hand washing/sanitising will be encouraged and hand sanitiser points will be at the entrance/exit.  By the lift downstairs and upstairs in White Gallery next to the lift.  We have installed doorguards to reduce the amount of handles that visitors need to touch.  We will be increasing the amount of cleaning we are doing to stair hand rails, doors lifts and toilet areas.

What if I have coronavirus symptoms?

You must not visit the museum if you have had any symptoms of coronavirus within the last 7 days.  Please follow current government guidance

Will I be able to talk to museum staff?

Yes all of our staff are aware of the guidance and will be available to safely support your experience. Please feel free to engage with them at any point during you visit.

Will the toilets be open?

Yes the toilets will be open. The ladies and gentlemen’s toilets will be unisex for the time being.  One person or household will be allowed in at a time.  We will have a member of staff on duty to direct their usage.  We will ask that people wash their hands before and after use.  The dedicated member of staff will undertake regular cleansing throughout the day.

Will the tearoom be open

The tearoom is operating as usual.  Visitors can access it by the front door of the Museum during their visit.

Will the shop be open?

We have re-opened our gift shop initially with a limited range, so that we can do so safely.
