Grave owners must understand what and when a memorial can be placed on a grave.

The owner of the right of burial of the grave is the only person able to authorise an installation of a new headstone or any additional inscriptions.

At the time of purchasing a new grave for burial, ensure you select the section of a cemetery which will allow you the type of memorial you require. Burial sections of the cemetery allows two types of grave.

Once a burial has occurred, we recommend waiting at least 6 months to allow the ground to settle and consolidate. During this time, staff will top up with topsoil until settlement ceases.

At the time of purchasing a cremation plot, ensure you discuss with a memorial mason about the types of headstone available within the limitations of a cremation plot.

Unauthorised memorials

In accordance with the Local Authorities Cemeteries Order 1977, the council reserve the right to remove any unauthorised memorial. The council may remove unauthorised items at any time without giving further notice.
