Memorial testing

The grave owner has a responsibility to maintain a memorial in a safe condition. If they fail to do this, the cemetery staff will take action to make the memorial safe.

We undertake works to ensure that cemeteries and closed churchyards are safe places to visits. All headstone and memorials within the Borough are tested.

Staff carry out inspections of memorials in the cemetery and if identified as being unstable will be cordoned off, laid flat or have a temporary support installed. We endeavour to contact the grave owner, and it is their responsibility to arrange repairs. If the lease has expired, you will not be allowed to renew until repairs are made.
