Scattering cremated remains on land not identified as a cemetery or crematorium
Many families choose to keep the cremated remains or arrange for them to be scattered elsewhere. This may include interment in a grave at another cemetery or churchyard, scattering at a different crematorium, or a private location chosen by the family. If you decide to do this, please ensure you have obtained the necessary permissions for your chosen location.
There is no legislation or local policy preventing the scattering of ashes in local parks; however, we advise against it for several reasons.
- Unlike scattering within a Borough cemetery, there will be no official record of the location for future reference.
- Park layouts are subject to change over time - trees may be removed.
- Planting schemes altered, or new equipment installed - this may cause distress, if these changes affect the area where ashes were scattered.
Please consider the long-term implications before choosing a location. Gardens of Remembrance within cemeteries and crematoria are protected spaces, ensuring that your loved one’s resting place will remain undisturbed.
