Types of petitions

There are different types of petition:

  1. Petitions with up to 24 signatures will be dealt with as a complaint.
  2. Ordinary Petitions – requiring between 25 and 749 signatures will either be dealt with by the appropriate service unit at the Council or referred to the relevant Overview and Scrutiny Panel (OSP). To determine how the petition is to be handled, the Petitions Officer will consult with the chair of the appropriate OSP and agree whether the matter should be referred to the Panel.
  3. Petitions for Debate – Petitions of 750 or more will be referred to the next ordinary meeting of the Council.
