Nuneaton Museum & Art Gallery is now showcasing a new photography exhibition by Nuneaton-born Michael D Wellington, exploring the creativity, individuality and self-expression of alternative fashion.
Michael was born and raised in Nuneaton before graduating from London Metropolitan University, where he studied for a BA (Hons) in Fashion Photography. His interest in alternative fashion developed during his studies, when he focused his dissertation on the subject.
Recognising a lack of research and documentation surrounding the alternative fashion scene, Michael began an ongoing photographic project to capture the people who bring it to life. Photographing both bands and fans, his work explores the relationship between music, fashion, and personal identity.
The photographs featured in the Landing Gallery exhibition, which runs until 9 January 2027, form part of this continuing project, which brings together two of Michael’s greatest passions of music and fashion.
Through his lens, he aims to document the distinctive styles and creative expression of the alternative scene, highlighting the thought, effort and imagination that go into creating each individual look.
Cllr Bobbie Greenwood, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Health, said:
“It’s wonderful to see the work of a gifted local photographer celebrated through this exhibition which offers visitors a fascinating insight into the creativity and individuality of alternative fashion.
“We’re proud to support opportunities that celebrate local talents and bring new perspectives to our venues.”
Michael hopes that visitors to the exhibition will gain a greater appreciation of the creativity and dedication behind alternative fashion, as well as the people who make the scene so distinctive.
Looking ahead, Michael is aiming to bring the project together in a photography book, providing a lasting record of the alternative fashion community and its diverse styles.
As with all the shows, admission is free, though donations are always welcomed, and there are also several temporary exhibitions to enjoy throughout the building.
