Come and see the Eccentric Contraptions exhibition at Nuneaton Museum & Art Gallery featuring amazing historical artifacts, including interesting inventions, quirky gadgets, and unusual appliances.
Built over 30 years, this collection demonstrates Maurice Collin’s passion for finding quirky, everyday gadgets used by people in the past. His collection now numbers more than 3,500 items and he has loaned over a hundred of them to Nuneaton Museum & Art Gallery.
The exhibition opens on Saturday, 25 July and runs until Saturday, 19 September.
Whilst a mystery to us now, each artifact was intended to make everyday life easier for the user. Challenge yourself to work out the use of each gadget.
Young and old will be amazed, confused and surprised from the variety of labour-saving devices created over the 150 years.
Some of Mr Collins' contraptions include:
- Domestic appliances: Featuring a Teasmade, window Burglar Alarm, Salesman’s Washing Machine (from 1894), and even a pea podder
- Business: A Victorian laptop and an early sat nav.
- Beauty: a wrinkle eradicator and heel protector
- A gunpowder keg
Nuneaton Museum & Art Gallery has the pleasure of hosting this fascinating exhibition throughout the school holidays. While at the Museum, younger visitors can take part in free craft activities on Thursday and Friday.
Cllr Bobbie Greenwood, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Health, said:
“We are delighted to be hosting this wonderful exhibition at the museum during the summer holidays.
“The timing provides plenty of opportunity for visitors to take in the exhibition as well as offering craft activities for youngsters to get involved in to really make the make of their museum visit.”
There are also other exhibitions, to enjoy for example the Ismatjahan’s World exhibition and the beautiful paintings of Gerald Ball.
