Bumper day planned to celebrate 800 years of Nuneaton Charter Market.
A special day of celebrations is planned to mark 800 years since King Henry III granted the Royal Charter to Nuneaton Street Market. The event will bring together the regular Saturday Street Market, The Teenage Market and Mark IT!, creating a vibrant megamarket for visitors to enjoy.
To mark this historic milestone, we are:
- Offering our traders a special Charter Market rates for the day
- Adding the popular Teenage Market – giving the next generation of market traders a chance to start their trade life
- And hosting Mark IT! which is a cultural celebration of trade and exchange, using live performance, workshops, a participatory trail and local artwork.
This event will bring together local market traders, businesses, communities and artists for a special celebration marking this historic moment in time.
The event will feature a programme of free live performances, including Talking Birds’ The Q and The Whale and Sign Spinning UK, alongside a podcast and spoken-word audio experience from Aspire in Arts, who will be gathering traders’ stories, amongst other offers.
Visitors can also enjoy a range of interactive “have a go” art market stalls, led by our amazing local artists, offering free opportunities to take part and get creative throughout the day.
A spokesperson man for Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council said:
“We would not have a street market, without our loyal traders, so we are offering special Charter Market rates for the day, 800p per single pitch and 1226p for van traders.
“As part of the Mark IT! there will be treasure map/art trail - in partnership with the Nuneaton BID, where you will use a map to follow a trail.
“This will encourage people to explore local business in the town and around the market, as well as a photographic exhibition of our market traders on the day.’’
Mark Ryder, Executive Director for Communities at Warwickshire County Council, said:
“We are delighted to see towns across Warwickshire continuing to embrace Teenage Markets as a way of creating connection, skills and opportunities for our young people.”
The celebration will be officially launched by the borough’s town crier Paul Gough.
Nuneaton Museum & Art Gallery has an exhibition about the market, running until Saturday 11 July as well as a slide show from Nuneaton Local History Group celebrating the 800th anniversary of the market.
Note:
Mark IT! is produced by local producers and artists from colLABorate Nuneaton and Bedworth, as part of an on-going programme of work to offer more cultural and creative experiences to local people in Nuneaton and Bedworth, and highlight the incredible artists that we have in our borough.
