Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council has been praised for its passion, ambition, and dedication to delivering positive change for residents following the publication of its latest review.

The independent review, named the Local Government Association (LGA) Corporate Peer Challenge, was carried out by senior officers and councillors from across the country, and recognised the Council’s strong leadership, deep knowledge of local communities, and major progress in delivering transformative regeneration programmes across the borough.

The report also noted how major projects in Grayson Place and the new Bedworth Physical Activity Hub are important drivers in long-term economic and health benefits.

Praise was also given to the constructive relationships between councillors, officers, and partners, describing them as collaborative and rooted in a shared pride for the area.

While the report noted financial pressures, the review confirmed that the Council has strengthened its financial foundations and is well placed to address future budget challenges.

The report welcomed the Council’s commitment to continuous improvement, including work under way to modernise governance, strengthen performance, and develop a new people strategy.

A dominant issue at present is Local Government Reorganisation, and it is noted how the Council’s leadership ensured the borough had a strong voice in discussions with other councils in Warwickshire ahead of submitting its case for two unitary authorities in the north and south of the county.

The review team noted the solid relationships the Council had with neighbouring authorities which enabled them to jointly commission research and options ahead of the proposal being submitted to government.

Cllr Chris Watkins, Leader of Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council, said:

“We are delighted with this positive and constructive report.

“It recognises the dedication of our officers and councillors, our ambitious regeneration plans and our determination to deliver for local people.

“We are already acting on the recommendations to further strengthen how we work, and this review confirms we are on the right track.

“Our focus remains on building a better future for every community in Nuneaton and Bedworth as we prepare for the future while respecting our heritage.”
