Nuneaton town centre
Nuneaton town centre is the largest town in Warwickshire with a population of around 88,000 residents. The core of the town consists of a pleasant pedestrian area, well served by convenient car parking, bus station and train station and surrounded by Riversley Park.
The town has a strong retail mix consisting of both independent and national brands including Next, Sassy Giraffe, TK Maxx, Giftilicious with Thorntons, Boots, New Look, Abbeycraft Artworld, Sports Direct, RetroDee Toys, Pandora, Boardgame Bunker, Waterstones and Joco Gifts.
Brief history
Nuneaton is the birth place of the author George Eliot, who was born on a farm on the Arbury estate just outside of the town centre in 1819 and lived in the town for much of her early life. Nuneaton Museum & Art Gallery has a gallery dedicated to her, as well as providing temporary exhibitions and events on an array of subjects.
Nuneaton’s name came from a 12th century Benedictine nunnery (part of which still exists) around which much of the town centre grew, including the market which was established in 1247. The nunnery fell into disrepair after 1539, with Henry VIII’s dissolution of the Monasteries and the market was relocated into the heart of the town centre where it remains to this day.
Nuneaton Market is situated in the main pedestrian area of the town centre with over 80 stalls trading every Wednesday and Saturday with a mix of stalls selling fresh fruit and veg, fresh meat and fish and household goods. Nuneaton Market is one of the largest and most successful markets in the area attracting visitors from throughout Warwickshire and neighbouring counties.
