Burials are chosen due to wish of the deceased or for religious or cultural reasons.

  • New graves are currently only available at Marston Lane Cemetery.
  • No new burial graves are available at Attleborough Cemetery, Coventry Road Cemetery, Oaston Road Cemetery or Stockingford (Bucks Hill) Cemetery.
  • Burials and interments of cremated remains can take place in existing graves where space allows.
  • Burials in existing or reserved graves may only proceed with the written permission of the registered grave owner; The only exception is when the deceased is the current registered grave owner.
  • Graves must be dug to a depth required to meet legal requirements and where further burials will be expected. In order to improve the sustainability of our cemeteries, we suggest that new graves are dug at a depth for two burials.

The Institute for Cemetery and Crematorium Management (ICCM) Guiding Principles for burial services states that immediately after the mourners have departed the graveside, the grave shall be entirely backfilled and made tidy. This work is completed on the day of the burial and coffins are never left uncovered overnight.

Some cultures require that the grave is filled in while the family watch or they may wish to undertake the backfilling of the grave themselves. If families request this, the cemetery must be made aware when the burial is first arranged. This ensures that safety is protected during the backfilling process.
