Report an abandoned vehicle

A taxed vehicle parked for a long time is not automatically considered abandoned. Vehicles may be left in a certain location for a long period of time because the owner has decided for whatever reason not to use the vehicle.

Read this guidance before submitting a report to ensure your report is directed to the appropriate authority.  Many reports we receive are for vehicles that are not abandoned.

Step 1: Check if the vehicle is taxed

Before reporting a vehicle, check its tax status using the official DVLA website:

Step 2: Report to DVLA if untaxed

If the vehicle is untaxed or classed as SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification) and parked on a public highway, you can report it to the DVLA, as it should not be left on the public highway.  The DVLA is the only authority with the powers to remove untaxed vehicles from the public highway.

The information you will need to include is:

  • Vehicle registration number
  • Make and model
  • Colour
  • Exact location
  • Time the vehicle is usually seen

Step 3: How to identify an abandoned vehicle

A vehicle may be considered abandoned if it shows signs such as:

  • Vandalism or fire damage
  • Poor condition and unused for a long time
  • Involved in a road traffic accident
  • Parked in an unusual or isolated location
  • Missing or damaged parts (for example, broken windows, flat tyres)
  • Unsecured (doors/boot unlocked or windows open)
  • Contains rubbish or debris

Step 4: Report an abandoned vehicle

Report an abandoned vehicle

When you report a vehicle as abandoned:

  • We investigate vehicles on local roads or property (including private land)
  • If on private land, landowner permission is required before removal
  • If deemed abandoned, a notice is placed on the vehicle
  • If no contact is received, the vehicle will be removed
