Houses in multiple occupation - Public register

What is the HMO register?

The Council maintains a register of licensed Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs), Temporary Exemption Notices (TENs), and Management Orders, as required by the Housing Act 2004.

How can I view the register?

  • The register is available for in-person viewing only at the Town Hall.
  • Appointments are required and can be booked during standard office hours by emailing envhousing@nuneatonandbedworth.gov.uk or contact customer services by calling 02476 376376.
  • Copying, photographing, or digital reproduction of the register is not permitted.

Why is some access restricted?

To protect the privacy and safety of residents, especially those in vulnerable housing situations, the Council excludes certain properties from the public register. These include:

  • Domestic abuse refuges
  • Properties managed by SERCO, which may house asylum seekers or other vulnerable individuals

This approach is in line with data protection laws and safeguarding responsibilities.

Freedom of Information (FOI) requests

You may submit an FOI request for HMO information. However, the Council may refuse requests that:

  • Risk the health or safety of individuals (Section 38)
  • Involve personal information (Section 40)
  • Could prejudice crime prevention (Section 31)

If your request relates to a specific property, the Council may consult its Data Protection Officer before responding.
