Extension to the cemetery at Oaston Road
Published on Wednesday, 25th May 2016
At a meeting of Cabinet this evening, the decision was taken to extend the cemetery at Oaston Road by making use of the land currently occupied by the Cemetery Lodge.
The decision was taken in response to views expressed by local people.
Cllr Ian Lloyd, Portfolio Holder for Arts and Leisure said:
‘Local residents have expressed their views in relation to the availability of burial ground within the Borough and we have listened. The Cemetery Lodge at Oaston Road, Nuneaton occupies land that is suitable for building but local people have let us know that they’d prefer the site to be used as an extension to the cemetery.
We considered using the land to build five new homes and this would have maximised the value of the site from a financial point of view; however, in light of local feeling we are satisfied that our decision this evening is in the best interests of the Borough and reflects the wishes of our residents.
The cemetery extension will provide additional mixed burial capacity of 269 full burial plots (7-8 years of supply) and 613 cremated remains plots (14 years of supply). It will also create an additional 80 plots within the Muslim burial area (7-8 years of supply).
I hope that our decision this evening has gone some way to alleviating any concerns about burial capacity within the Borough. In the short to medium term we have more than enough capacity to meet our needs and we’ll be in a position to take a longer-term view once our Borough Plan is finalised.
We recognise that this is an emotive issue and will continue to listen to local people in developing our future plans. I would also like to take this opportunity to reassure people that the Council will not be considering the use of Attleborough Park or any other designated park for cemetery requirements. We believe that these amenities are very important to local communities and we give our commitment to protecting them.’
