Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council has completed 15 new, high-quality council homes at Pearson Place, Armson Road, Bedworth, bringing much-needed new housing to the town while honouring history.
The development has transformed a former garage site into new council housing, making positive use of previously developed land and helping to meet local housing need.
Pearson Place is named in honour of Bert Pearson, recognising his connection to the Exhall Colliery disaster of 1915 and helping to preserve an important part of the area’s local mining heritage for future generations.
The disaster occurred on 21 September 1915, when a fire at Exhall Colliery put 375 miners at risk and resulted in the deaths of 14 men.
Bert Pearson, described as a young lad, was found alive, trapped beneath the fallen bodies of three miners.
The weight of his workmates collapsing on top of him had caused Bert to lose consciousness, but it saved his life. Stuck at the bottom of the pile, he was prevented from breathing in deadly fumes. As the air in the tunnels improved, Bert awoke to find he was trapped and was found by rescuers who rushed him to safety.
The new development comprises a mix of homes, including six one-bedroom flats, six two-bedroom houses and three four-bedroom houses.
Harper Group, which has extensive experience in delivering residential developments, began work on the site in April 2025, with construction now successfully completed and the new homes ready for occupation.
Cllr James Bartlett, Portfolio Holder for Housing, said:
"The completion of Pearson Place forms part of the Council’s wider commitment to increase the supply of high-quality council homes.
"This makes effective use of Council-owned land, supporting local communities and contributing towards the creation of vibrant and sustainable neighbourhoods across Nuneaton and Bedworth."
This development forms part of the Council’s Corporate Plan and ongoing commitment to increase the number of council homes available for residents, and to support local businesses and create vibrant, sustainable communities across the Borough.
