The Leader of Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council has appointed a new member of Cabinet focused on finance, reinforcing the authority’s commitment to maintaining strong governance in the Borough.
The change takes place after a period of political instability.
Cllr Peter Gilbert has been appointed Portfolio Holder for Finance and is an experienced local government politician having previously been Leader of the Council.
Deputy Leader Cllr Mike Bannister will continue to lead Resources and Internal Affairs, providing continuity and stability.
As we prepare for Local Government Reorganisation in Warwickshire, every pound of taxpayers’ money must be accounted for and every major project and decision subjected to challenge and financial discipline.
Cllr George Finch, Leader of Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council, said:
“Our administration has been clear from day one that we will challenge old ways of doing things, insist on value for money and put residents before bureaucracy. Strengthening the Cabinet with someone of Councillor Gilbert’s calibre is consistent with that approach.
“Many people across the borough know Councillor Gilbert personally and know his reputation for hard work, sound judgement and an unwavering grasp of local government finance. I have absolutely no doubt that he will make a significant contribution as we continue to rebuild confidence in the Council and prepare for the future.
“We promised to put the Council back on a sound footing, building a Cabinet with the experience, ability and determination to deliver that responsibility is exactly what people elected us to do.”
The decision reflects the increasing complexity of local government finance at a time when councils across the country face significant financial pressures.
