The decision has been made to temporarily fence off the chapel at Oaston Road Cemetery, Nuneaton, as a precautionary measure after initial maintenance works identified areas requiring assessment.
During initial works, contractors highlighted structural concerns that need further inspection. While there is no immediate danger to the public, the Council has taken the decision to restrict access to the area surrounding the chapel until full surveys and any necessary remedial works are completed.
The extent to which works are required to make the chapel structurally sound is unknown at this time, however, the cemetery remains open as usual.
Cllr Brady Hughes, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Health, said:
“Public safety is always our top priority.
“Although the issues identified are precautionary at this stage, it is important that we take swift, responsible action while detailed investigations are carried out.
“We appreciate the understanding of cemetery visitors.”
The Council is working closely with structural specialists to assess the findings and determine the next steps.
