Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council has voted unanimously in support of establishing two new unitary authorities in Warwickshire.

A system that comprises two unitary authorities in the county, would see one established in the north and another in the south, rather than pursuing a single unitary authority covering the whole of Warwickshire.

The decision, which was made at an Extraordinary Council meeting on Wednesday, 29 October, reflects the Council’s commitment to ensuring that the unique needs and priorities of residents in the north of Warwickshire, including those in Nuneaton and Bedworth, are fully represented in any future local government reorganisation.

A consultation was open for residents to submit their views on Local Government Reorganisation between 7 August and 14 September. More than 2,300 people submitted feedback and 73 per cent of those expressed their preference for two unitary authorites to be established.

The preferred option will be submitted by Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council to government to consider as part of its reorganisation proposals.

Councillors agreed that while local government reform offers opportunities for more efficient services, a single county-wide authority would not deliver the best outcomes for the people of the borough or ensure fair representation in northern communities.

It is also recognised that the north and south of the county hold different economic and social profiles.

Cllr Chris Watkins, Council Leader, said:

“This unanimous decision shows that every councillor in Nuneaton and Bedworth recognises the importance of giving our residents a stronger voice.

“A single unitary authority risks diluting the needs and priorities of people in the north of the county.

“By supporting two unitary authorities, we are a backing a fairer, more balanced approach that works for all parts of Warwickshire.”

Cllr Kris Wilson, Leader of the Opposition, said:

“This is about ensuring local people get the best deal possible. The north of Warwickshire has distinct challenges and opportunities that deserve proper attention.

“Two unitary authorities would provide the focus and accountability needed to deliver for our communities and protect local decision making.”

The Council will now share its plans with the relevant authorities and partners ahead of submitting its proposals for two unitary authorities at the end of November for consideration by government.
