The 2024 Civic Honours award winners

Do you know somebody who has gone above and beyond in the borough community? You can now nominate them for a Civic Honour.

Following a decision made by the Civic Honours Sub-Committee on 24 September, Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council is inviting residents to nominate people they believe are deserving of a civic honour.

Civic Honours is the Council’s recognition programme open to anybody who has made a significant contribution to life in the borough.

Every nomination must be supported by a seconder, with sufficient information about why the individual is being nominated. Consent from the nominee is also required for data protection purposes. Remember, you cannot nominate yourself for a civic honour.

Nominations are made using the Council’s nomination form, available on the Civic Honours webpage where you can find further information about the programme and previous winners.

Submissions will then be validated before being considered by councillors as to which recognition, if any, will be awarded. These include:

  • Borough Award of Merit (a new award for residents to the civic honours programme)
  • Names of places or streets in the Borough (awarded posthumously only)
  • Honorary Aldermen or Alderwomen (former councillors)
  • Mayoral Award (awarded at the discretion of the Mayor)
  • Freedom of the Borough (the highest honour in which recipients become a Freeman or Freewoman)
  • Freedom of Entry to the Borough (reserved for military personnel)

The nomination process closes at 11:59pm on Sunday, 16 November.

Cllr Steve Hey, Portfolio Holder for Corporate Resources, said:

“Civic pride has a strong tradition in Nuneaton and Bedworth and that is why we are looking to continue the programme and honour the borough’s community champions.

“These are citizens who have made outstanding contributions to life in our borough and it’s time they received the recognition they deserve.”

“We encourage those who know somebody worthwhile of nomination for a civic honour to take the time do so for our unsung heroes.”

Once nominations have been considered and recipients finalised, those successful will be invited to an Extraordinary Council meeting to receive their award in January next year.
