Newdigate Colliery & District Sports & Social Club

From 1 October the pavilion and sports pitches at Newdigate Recreation Ground have transferred to the responsibility of Newdigate Colliery & District Sports & Social Club the Council can confirm.

The decision comes following a mutual agreement to end a long-standing arrangement in place since 1970, which saw the Council manage and maintain the pavilion, green space, and sports pitches on the site.

This arrangement has ensured the continued use of facilities for community and sporting purposes for more than five decades.

Following Cabinet recommendations approved in April 2024, a public notice to advertise the proposed surrender of the lease was published between 24 April and 1 May 2024. With no objections received, Cabinet subsequently agreed for the lease to be surrendered and for a new agreement for the site to be negotiated in July 2024.

After positive discussions with Newdigate Colliery & District Sports & Social Club, it has been agreed that the sports pitches and pavilion will become the sole responsibility of the landowner and the land that the play area is on will be transferred to the Council for ownership and maintenance.

Cllr Brady Hughes, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Health, said:

“The Council has proudly supported the club for more than 50 years through the lease arrangement, ensuring high-quality facilities for local people.

“We are pleased to have reached a mutual agreement that the club to take on full responsibility for its pavilion and sports pitches, while the Council will maintain the play area for community use.

“This agreement gives the club greater control over its future, while ensuring the site remains an important hub for sport and recreation in Bedworth.”

The club has detailed its plans to install fencing around the sports pitches to help prevent anti-social behaviour, ensuring the facilities remain safe and welcoming for members and visitors.
