Your chance to handle objects from the past

Activities for families have been arranged to tie in with Heritage Open Days.

On Saturday 13 September visitors can take part in Second Hand September and help to create a mural of Riversley Park using recycled materials.

The activity runs from 11am until 3:30pm, there is no need to book, just drop in.

Also, on the same day, there is a Hands-on History session where visitors can explore the history of recycling, running from 11am until 3:30pm.

This is done through Museum objects that have been repurposed or reused and like Second Hand September, there is no need to book.

Cllr Brady Hughes, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture, said:

“We are delighted to be able to offer these fantastic activities to coincide with Heritage Open Days.

“Both will prove great entertainment for youngsters and families, there are activities going on throughout the year at our museum as well as some wonderful exhibitions and displays and I urge everyone to visit.’’

Every September, free to access events are organised across England to celebrate our heritage and history through Heritage Open Days.

These events take place between Friday 12 and Sunday, 21 September 2025.

With the help of volunteers and partners across the country, there are free in-person events ranging from walking and guided tours to interior openings, short talks and more.

While at the Museum why not check out the temporary exhibitions.

Admission is free though donations are always welcome.
