An example of an empty property in the borough

A significant step has been taken in addressing the issue of long-term empty properties across the borough with the appointment of a dedicated Empty Property Officer and a new online reporting form.

The Report an empty property form enables residents to easily notify the Council of empty properties in Nuneaton and Bedworth. The form captures information about suspected empty properties, including location, condition, and length of vacancy.

This initiative forms part of the Corporate Plan and the wider strategy to bring empty properties, whether they are residential or commercial, back into use.

Once submitted, the information is reviewed by the Empty Property Officer, who will assess each case and determine the most appropriate action. This can include working with the property owners to encourage renovation, offering support and advice, or taking enforcement action where necessary.

Cllr Chris Watkins, Leader and Portfolio Holder for Housing, said:

“Empty properties, particularly homes, can become a real blight on our communities, they can attract anti-social behaviour, fall into disrepair and are a wasted resource at a time when demand is high.

“By employing a dedicated Empty Property Officer and launching this online reporting tool, we’re empowering residents to help us take meaningful action.

“This is about improving our borough and making sure that properties are being used to their full potential.”

The form gives the authority greater visibility and insight into empty properties that may not have been formally recorded, enabling a more proactive and targeted approach, as well as earlier intervention.

By gathering local intelligence and community input, the Council aims to identify problem properties faster and work towards reducing the negative impact empty properties have on the borough.

The data collected will inform strategic planning and resource allocation and engage residents to assist in maintaining the quality and safety of their neighbourhoods.
