Ensor's Pool

Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council, alongside partner Warwickshire Police, is advising people against swimming in open bodies of water.

The advice comes after Wojciech Berlan, aged 27, from Redditch, drowned in Ensor’s Pool, Nuneaton, on Sunday, 17 August.

Lakes, pools, rivers, canals and quarries are all examples of bodies of open water which can carry many dangers for swimmers which can be fatal.

Cllr Brady Hughes, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Health, said:

“We wish to pass on our condolences to the family and friends of Wojciech Berlan who died in these tragic circumstances.

“We also want to remind people to stay out of open water, the risks of swimming or related activities include uneven surfaces, deep mud, strong hidden currents, sudden drops and unexpected obstacles.

“There are also much colder temperatures than expected, even during heatwaves, and there is the possibility of catching waterborne diseases.

“Children and teenagers in particular, who do not realise the dangers, are attracted to such activities.

“Therefore, we are asking parents to talk to their children to highlight the dangers.’’

Inspector Ryan Walker, of Nuneaton and Bedworth Safer Neighbourhood Team, said:

“We don't want to see any more tragedies. Our advice continues to be to avoid swimming in open water if it's not a designated swimming area.

"If you see someone in the water please call 999 straight away.

“Wild swimming can be very hazardous, the water can be extremely cold even in hot weather, leading to shock which can result in drowning.

“It’s also often difficult to see where the bottom of the water is, and swimmers could be put at risk of entanglement with discarded items in the water."
