A tribute to the British "Tommies'' at Nuneaton Town Hall

The 80th anniversary of VJ Day (Victory over Japan) takes place on Friday, 15 August, commemorating the end of the Second World War.

The milestone will be honoured in Nuneaton and Bedworth by several events, starting with the VJ 80 flag raising ceremony on Friday, 15 August, at 10:00am at Nuneaton Town Hall front steps.

A wreath laying service will then take place at the Riversley Park War Memorial, Nuneaton, with a two-minute silence at 11:00am followed by Deputy Mayor Cllr Tracy Sheppard laying a wreath.

A similar wreath laying service takes place at the same time at the War Memorial, in Coventry Road Cemetery, Bedworth, with Mayor Cllr Bhim Saru laying the wreath.

The following day, Saturday, 16 August, sees 1940s singer Eleanor Mattley who will be performing in the Entertainment Zone in Nuneaton Market Place, from 10:30am until 1:00pm, supported by Strictly Jitterbug, teaching everyone how to jive.

There will be 80 mini portions of free fish and chips, courtesy of the Nuneaton BID and Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council on a first come, first served basis. Collect the voucher from the BID stall in the Entertainment Zone and take it to the The Palace Cafe Bar, Newdegate Street.

Council Leader, Cllr Chris Watkins, said:

“We would like to encourage our residents to take part in these events.

“They commemorate the sacrifice given by our residents and people worldwide so we can have the freedoms we enjoy today.’’

Nuneaton Town Hall’s frontage has been decorated accordingly, with Union flag bunting, and red, white and blue flowers.

Along with red, white and blue planters, a mural, and Tommy figures that have recently been put up.

Members of the public are encouraged to participate in a national two-minute silence on Friday, 15 August, at 12:00pm to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.
