Bag that poo, any bin will do

Residents in Nuneaton and Bedworth may be in for a surprise next week as dog fouling hotspot areas become a little bit more colourful as part of the Borough Council’s latest Dog Fouling Campaign.

Officers from Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council’s Environmental Health Team will be patrolling the two worst dog fouling hotspot areas in the Borough on Monday, 2 June, and spraying a bright circle around dog waste they find before picking it up.

These areas will then be patrolled again later that week on Friday, 6 June, and any further dog fouling found will be sprayed a different colour and picked up.

This is the part of the Council’s latest efforts to raise awareness with irresponsible dog owners who fail to clear up after their dog.

The Council understands that most dog owners are responsible and is using this dog fouling campaign as an opportunity to reward those that do pick up after their pets.

While out on their patrols, officers will be giving those that they see picking up behind their dogs a ticket to enter them into a prize draw where they could win a treat for their pet up to the value of £25.

Residents and visitors to the borough can also expect to see posters and litter bins stickered with anti-dog fouling graphics to raise awareness of the campaign.

Remember, dog waste can be placed into any public waste bin after it has been picked up. It does not just have to be put into a dog waste bin.

Cllr Tony Venson, Portfolio Holder for Planning and Enforcement, said:

“It is only a small number of irresponsible dog owners who decide not to clean up behind their dogs.

“We want them to realise just what they are leaving behind in their community by visually highlighting it to them on the streets.

“We hope that this, along with the prize draw, and handing out free dog waste bags, will give those that don’t bag it up, the incentive to start, and those that already do, the chance to be rewarded for their actions.”

“We also want to encourage the use of any litter bins for dog waste, you don’t need to use the ones exclusively allocated for it.”

Anybody caught not picking up after their dog will be issued with a fixed penalty notice of £100.
