Approval to be sought for Borough Plan consultation

Published on Tuesday, 17th January 2017

Papers will be available online today for a Cabinet meeting on 25th January, where approval will be sought to consult on the Borough Plan before it goes to examination by an independent inspector.

If approved, the consultation will start on 30th January and run for six weeks. The consultation will involve drop-in sessions across the Borough, and both the Plan and its associated documents will be available on the Council’s website, as well as in all libraries across the Borough.

The Plan includes proposals for the delivery between 2011 and 2031 of around 13,000 houses (3,000 of which have already received planning permission, or been built) and around 100 hectares of employment land.

The purpose of the Borough Plan is to set out a vision and a framework for the future development in the area, addressing needs and opportunities in relation to housing, the economy, community facilities and infrastructure – as well as being a basis for safeguarding the environment, adapting to climate change and securing good design. The Plan will also be a critical tool in guiding decisions about individual development proposals.

In preparing the Plan, the Council have created the document whilst ensuring that it is justified, effective, and consistent with national policy plus positively prepared to deliver sustainable development - so that it can meet both local needs and national priorities.

An Infrastructure Delivery Plan will also accompany the Borough Plan, which sets out the infrastructure needs for the Borough; such as transport, schools, GP surgeries and parks. Another key document supporting the Plan is the Sustainability Appraisal, which assesses the sustainability of the Plan. Both of these documents will also be available to view and make representations on, as part of the consultation beginning 30th January.
