Lights! Music! Action! Christmas is about to arrive!

Councillor Dennis Harvey, Leader of the Council, today released more details of this year's programme of festive fun.
Cllr Harvey said:
“Christmas in Nuneaton, Bedworth and Bulkington is a truly magical experience for all the family. There’s something for everyone with an exciting mix of attractions, events, Christmas markets and Christmas shopping – our town centres really come alive during the festive season, it’s my favourite time of year.
This year we’ll be holding all three Christmas light switch on events during the course of a single week. Nuneaton is first on Sunday 20 November, followed by Bulkington on Tuesday 22 November and Bedworth on Saturday 26 November. We have fun-packed programmes for each celebration that are shaping up to be our most exciting Christmas events yet.”
With our town centres transformed with thousands of stunning lights, we’ll start the festive season in style with live entertainment, children’s rides and side shows and a whole host of Christmas market stalls and charity stands.
Nuneaton is the first event and arrangements are well underway. This year we’ve opted to hold the celebrations on a Sunday, in response to popular demand. Charity stalls, market traders and retailers will be open for business from 10.00am, supported by children’s rides and attractions. Shops throughout the town centre will be open to tempt you with early Christmas ideas all rounded off with the festive smell of mulled wine and hot chestnuts!
Between 12noon and 4.30pm, three dedicated performance areas will feature street entertainment throughout the day in Queens Road, Market Place and Bridge Street outside Wilkinsons. The atmospheric George Eliot Gardens will host an ice skating rink supported by a covered disco dome playing Christmas music and an inflatable fun house.
Cafes, bars and restaurants will also be opening their doors to hungry shoppers and festive merry makers alike, offering delicious food and drink menus. Once again, town crier Paul Gough will be on hand to add his voice to the festivities.
Councillor Harvey added;
“Other planned attractions include Go Karts and for the more energetic our 12 metre climbing wall! The big switch on in Nuneaton will take place in front of The Town Hall at 5.00pm, with the Mayor and Santa himself doing the honours. This will be followed almost immediately by a festive musical firework finale that’s far too good to miss!”
Christmas arrives in Bulkington from 4pm on Tuesday 22nd November.
Featuring local entertainers and everything that says ‘Christmas is here’, the streets will be buzzing with the biggest village celebration of the year. The switch on is at 6.00pm following traditional community carol singing featuring local groups and supported by Bulkington Silver Band. The fun runs through until 8.00pm with the support of local shops, charities, rides and attractions.
Bedworth becomes the focal point on Saturday 26th November where the annual folk festival, this year celebrating 40 years will be in full swing, supporting the last of the borough’s big switch on events.
A similar programme to Nuneaton has been arranged with entertainment in the street and covered market from 11.00am through until 4.30pm as well as a comprehensive Folk Festival Programme at The Civic Hall and various venues around the town. Local retailers will again be offering an array of Christmas ideas and suggestions. Charity organisations will also be hoping that they will win your support to assist with their vital fundraising as the season of goodwill descends on us all.
The main event of the evening is the switch on from the main stage located in All Saints Square at 5.00pm and as in Nuneaton, the firework finale will follow shortly afterwards. Rides and attractions will run through from 10.00am until 8.00pm in the evening.
Further information about all three switch on events with details of the special Christmas markets, late night shopping and this year’s traditional family pantomime, Cinderella, at The Civic Hall in Bedworth (3-27 December) will be available soon. Watch this space!
