Commitment to cycling

Published on Wednesday, 14th September 2016

NBBC is highly committed to raising levels of fitness and wellbeing across the borough and cycling is one of the many activities we encourage.

This commitment has been demonstrated in many ways, including our work with partners to deliver a first class cycle way in the north of Nuneaton with a total of £932,401 being spent.

Our Parks & Countryside and Sports Development teams are actively involved with developing cycling and encouraging further take up of this activity, but like all other local authorities, we are subject to significant budget cuts resulting from changes in government funding.

We constantly review our services to ensure that we maximise our resources, ensuring that we focus on our priorities and service impact. As part of this on-going process, our Sports Development Team recently took advantage of an opportunity to free up some resource within its service by transferring responsibility for the secretarial support for the local cycle forum over to Warwickshire County Council (WCC), the lead agency for highways.

Cllr Ian Lloyd, portfolio holder for Arts and Leisure said:

“The Borough Council has been providing secretarial support to the local cycle forum since 2014 but as WCC already undertakes this work for Stratford and other Warwickshire districts, it makes total sense for us to take advantage of this service too.

WCC is the lead highways agency and is best placed to co-ordinate this work and, in freeing up some resource within our own Sports Development Team, we have more capacity to promote cycling and other physical activities within the borough.”
