The climbing tower, onwards and upwards

NNBC is one of the very few local authorities in the UK to offer residents the opportunity to experience rock climbing, a sport that promotes good physical and mental well-being and is recommended by the NHS.
The Council’s new climbing tower made its first appearance early in the summer and has now been tested at a variety of locations across the borough. With this early experience in hand, the Council is now taking stock and planning the next phase of roll-out to maximise impact.
Councillor Ian Lloyd, portfolio holder for Arts and Leisure said:
“This is a fantastic new facility that encourages more people to participate in sport. Our Sports Development Team is always looking for new ways to entice our residents to get more active and here in Nuneaton and Bedworth we have a particularly rich and varied sports offer that’s the envy of many other districts. The climbing tower allows us to offer our residents one of the most exciting activities around.
We’ve now had a good few months to test the tower and we’re currently evaluating our experience. As with any new service, it’s important to take a careful and considered approach in the early stages and take stock of any lessons learned before embarking on the next stage.
We’ve received many requests for visits, but have been cautious not to over-commit the service, particularly whilst we are still gaining experience in its delivery. So far the tower has had 23 outings and has been hired five times by external customers, giving us the experience to develop our delivery model going forward.
The tower is in demand and in putting together the plan for the next stage of roll-out, we need to make sure that all communities have fair access and that we maximise impact across the borough.”
We’ll be announcing the programme for climbing tower visits over the coming months so please keep an eye on our website.
