Why the council has introduced charges

The costs for replacing and providing new bins has been in excess of £100,000 annually. Continued financial pressures, reductions in funding and rising costs mean that the Council can no longer afford to provide replacement containers free of charge.

Under Section 93 of the Local Government Act 2003, councils are allowed to charge for discretionary services such as the provision of waste containers (bins).

The council has kept costs low and presently spends £2.50 per household, per week collecting your refuse. This covers staffing costs, vehicle costs, fuel costs, waste storage costs, and everything else involved in the collection of your waste. However, this does not cover the cost of supplying the actual container.

The charge does not mean that you own the bin, all bins will remain the property of Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council. It will remain your responsibility to look after the bin, we recommend clearly marking the bin with your house number.
