Council Tax Support Consultation 2026
Have your say on the proposed new scheme for April 2027
Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council is proposing to change its Council Tax Support Working Age scheme from 1 April 2027. Council Tax Support is a reduction in the amount of Council Tax that working-aged people on a low income need to pay.
There are over 6,133 working age residents in the Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough who receive Council Tax Support because they are on a low income and cannot afford to pay their Council Tax Bill. The reduction is paid directly to the Council Tax account to reduce the amount of Council Tax that they owe.
The Government sets the rules which tell us how much Council Tax Support can be paid to pensioners on a low income, and Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council is responsible for setting the scheme for working age customers.
The current scheme
Under the current scheme, all working age claimants who receive Council Tax Support, are required to contribute at least 15% towards their Council Tax bill and therefore the maximum reduction that they can get is 85%.
Proposal for 2027/28
We are proposing to change the Council Tax Support scheme from April 2027 so that working age residents who receive the support can receive up to 85% reduction and to introduce a more simplified income banded scheme.
We are not proposing any changes to the scheme for pensioners, and they will continue to receive up to 100% reduction in their bill.
