Help available to bring empty properties back into use

Published on Tuesday, 17th September 2019

Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council is fully committed to reducing the number of empty homes it has in the Borough.

As National Empty Homes Week 2019 is running from 23rd -29th September we would like to remind you about the help and assistance available, whether you are an owner of an empty home or live near one.

Empty properties are a wasted resource and if left unattended can become an eyesore and be a blight on the community. This can bring down the value of properties in the area and attract anti-social behaviour. Empty properties can also become expensive to keep empty due to premium council tax charges and expensive maintenance costs with no return for the owners.

If you own an empty home and want to bring it back into use, we can help you with our Empty Homes Loan. Our loan is used to assist owners of properties that have been empty for 6 months or more to carry out any works required to bring it back into use. You can borrow up to £10,000 per property on a 0% interest basis which is repayable over 5 years. We have already helped lots of people bring their empty property back into use and the scheme allows people who are struggling to fund renovation works to speed up the process in an affordable way.

Customers who have shared their experience of working with us have said:

"The team at Nuneaton and Bedworth Council were very helpful and friendly throughout the process.  They performed regular checks on the property to follow the build work and release the funds in a timely manner so that we could pay the contractors.  The process for applying for the loan was made very easy by the team.

"The Empty homes team were so helpful from start to finish. The whole process was made very straightforward and simple. The loan was so useful and made a big difference to our project. I would highly recommend anyone to look into it for their refurbishment."

Councillor Chris Watkins, Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities highlighted:

“Housing is currently in high demand, but short supply.  Empty properties represent a wasted resource and can blight our communities attracting crime and antisocial behavior.

"The Council is committed to dealing with long term empty properties as a priority so that more housing is available within the Borough and these loans offer affordable funding to help owners turn their empty property around quickly.”

If you are interested in the loan or any other aspect of our empty homes work please see our website or get in touch with the Empty Property Officer on 02476 376421 or email

If you know of, or live near an empty property please let us know. Whilst there are different ways in which we can work with the owner to bring empty property back into use we can also use enforcement action if appropriate to improve a properties appearance or protect it from unauthorised intruders.

Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council also has a designated Landlord Liaison & Development Officer. If you would like any advice or assistance with regards to renting out your property and invites to our Landlord Forum events, please email or call 02476 376300.
