Remembering Srebrenica

The Minister of Faith, Lord Bourne of Aberystwyth has requested that Council’s support the timely and important work of Remembering Srebrenica.

Remembering Srebrenica, funded by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, is a UK charitable initiative that works to commemorate the victims of Srebrenica, the worst atrocity committed on European soil since the Second World War.

On July 11th 1995 in Srebrenica units of the Bosnian Serb Army commenced the mass slaughter of 8000 Bosniaks, mainly Muslim and mainly men and boys.  The atrocities continued to the 22nd July 1995.  Thousands were displaced and there was widespread sexual violence against Bosniak women.

On this, the 24th Anniversary of the Srebrenica massacre the Borough Council will fly the Borough Flag at half-mast for the eleven days of the Srebrenica Genocide.

There will be a Book of Condolence in the Town Hall for those who wish to record their thoughts.
