Recycle Week: This is the year Nuneaton and Bedworth said ‘We Do!’

Published on Monday, 24th September 2018

Nuneaton and Bedworth can shout loud and proud that ‘We Do’ recycle! In the biggest and best Recycle Week ever, Recycle Now is tasking residents to go above and beyond to protect the environment.

From Blue Planet II, to major developments towards reducing unnecessary plastic, this year people have been motivated to care about the environment in a way they never have before. For its 15th annual Recycle Week (24-30 September), Recycle Now is capitalising on this energy right here in the Borough; tasking residents – and people all over the UK – to build on this momentum by now focussing on getting our recycling right during Recycle Week.

Why? Because Nuneaton and Bedworth DOES recycle. Because it matters.

Getting recycling right

With billboard advertising across the nation, a national tour, and a huge scale digital campaign, this year’s Recycle Week is the biggest and boldest yet; celebrating the fact that more and more of us are recycling.

In fact, as a nation we are recycling more than ever before, but it’s important that we get it right. New research from Recycle Now shows while people in the UK say doing their bit for the environment is one of the primary motivations for recycling; over three quarters of UK households (76%) add one or more items to their recycling collection that is not accepted locally, which can be problematic in the recycling process. Meanwhile more than half (54%) put at least one item in the general rubbish that could be recycled.

But fear not – Recycle Now is here to help! Nuneaton and Bedworth is a Borough of recyclers – but there are some simple things that we can all do to make our recycling even better.

Top tips for recycling:

  • Recycle more of these items: shampoo and hand wash bottles, toilet roll tubes and juice cartons
  • Make sure these never go in the recycling bin: plastic carrier bags, plastic film, coat hangers and black plastic

And if you’re at all unsure about how to recycle a specific item, remember that Recycle Now’s Recycling Locator can show you exactly what needs to go in the recycling bin where you live.

Recycle. Nuneaton and Bedworth does. Because it matters.

What and how we recycle really matters. Recycling an item rather than throwing it in the general rubbish bin means that it will be dealt with in the most environmentally-friendly way, keeping materials in use and out of the environment.

Craig Stephens, campaign manager for Recycle Now, said:

“This year we’ve all taken more notice of our impact on the environment, and realised that recycling is part of reducing that impact. Here in Nuneaton and Bedworth it’s no different – more and more of us are recycling, so the next step is to make sure we get our recycling right. So come on, keep up the great work and let’s make the Nuneaton and Bedworth’s recycling better than ever before!”

Councillor Jill Sheppard, Portfolio holder for Central Services and Refuse, said:

“Recycling has always been important to us in Nuneaton and Bedworth. We know our residents care about the environment they live in and would like to thank our residents for recycling as much as they can.

Last year we recycled just under 10,000 tonnes of household items, and I look forward to seeing that increase further as time goes on, reducing recycling that ends up in black bins.”
