Operational issues delay some bin collections

NBBC apologises to residents for missed bin collections over recent weeks. As a result of operational problems, collections for a small number of Borough streets did not happen on the usual day.
The operational problems relate to the availability of vehicles and staff and are similar to those experienced by other local authorities.
Barry Longden, Cabinet member with responsibility for refuse collection said:
“Normally, our refuse collection service is exceptionally reliable and we’re sorry that recently we’ve been unable to meet our usual high standards.
“We’re doing all we can to resolve our operational problems but unfortunately it will take a little time to get back to the high standards our residents quite rightly expect.
“The problems we have encountered are beyond our control and could not have been anticipated. The service relies heavily on vehicles and manpower; consequently, any mechanical or staff resource issues have an immediate impact on service delivery.
“Unfortunately, we’re unable to afford to fund reserve vehicles and employ extra staff just in case something goes wrong; continued Government cuts to our budgets mean that all our services are very lean without the luxury of contingency arrangements.
“We’re working hard, reallocating our resources in the short term and taking actions to improve our flexibility and resilience in the medium to longer term to ensure that our normal excellent service will resume as soon as possible and be maintained in the future.”
