The building will be illuminated in blue and yellow, the colours of the Ukrainian flag, to commemorate Independence Day tomorrow, 24 August, exactly 18 months after Russia’s full-scale invasion.

People and organisations across the UK joined last year’s Independence Day, sharing public messages of support and unity. This show of support was warmly received by Ukrainians both here and in Ukraine.

Cllr Kris Wilson, Leader of Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council, said:

“The thunder of war rumbles on in Ukraine as the largest conflict in Europe since the Second World War continues.

“The people of Ukraine are experiencing death and devastation, but their determination remains undimmed.

“Therefore, in a show of solidarity with the innocent people of Ukraine – including those who are living in our communities here in Nuneaton and Bedworth – the Town Hall will once again be lit up as a sign of our ongoing commitment to support those who stand against tyranny and oppression.”

Through the Homes for Ukraine visa scheme, thousands of households in communities across the country have already provided a safe and welcoming home to those in need. Since the start of the scheme in March 2022, 74 Nuneaton and Bedworth families have offered their support and opened their homes to 118 Ukrainian guests. 

The generosity of the public has been overwhelming, but it remains unsafe for people to return home to Ukraine and many people still need a safe and secure place to stay while they find their feet in the UK.

The UK government continue to need people with space in their home to step forward and join the Homes for Ukraine heroes, who are making an incredible difference, every single day.
