Councillors stood to applaud ceremonial Sergeant at Mace Dave Leach at his final council meeting, last Wednesday night (19 October).

A familiar figure at around 200 council meetings over his 27 years of Borough Council service, not to mention hundreds of Borough Council events, Dave Leach retires this month.

Councillors unanimously agreed a vote of thanks and stood to applaud him, and speeches in his honour, at the full council meeting.

Nuneaton resident Dave has worked in a number of roles during his council service, including service as mace-bearer and supporting dozens of mayors as the Mayor’s Officer, as well as supporting Borough Council events working as part of the Events team.

Borough Council Leader, Cllr Kris Wilson, said:

“Dave has been the unsung hero of Council events. Without Dave there would have been no support for local charities.

“He will also be remembered for the great support he gave to new members, and I remember the quiet support he gave me 12 years ago when I joined this council.”

Cllr Wilson moved a vote of thanks to honour his contribution to civic life.

He added:

“It’s the least the Council can do for such a man.”

Also a dedicated fisherman and Treasurer and Company Secretary at Chilvers Coton Heritage Centre, Dave told councillors:

“It has been an honour to be the Council’s mace-bearer, and I will miss the Council.

“Thank you for everything. I have been proud to be the Borough Council’s mace-bearer.”
