More work required to complete Borough Plan

Published on Thursday, 6th October 2022

Planning and Development Portfolio Holder, Cllr Richard Smith, has outlined why he believes planners need more time to complete work on Nuneaton and Bedworth’s Borough Plan

Responses received during a public consultation on the Council’s preferred options draft version of the Plan earlier this year has meant more work is needed to ensure the document is ready to be published and sent to the Planning Inspectorate for consideration.

The timescale has been revised to address concerns about how much employment land is needed and what the right number of houses might be needed in the area to meet national targets, together with objections from government agencies. It will also ensure all the evidence to support the Borough Plan is up to date.

The local authority had hoped to publish its revised Plan this month. But if councillors at next week’s Borough Plan Committee agree, the publication date will be put back until April 2023.

Portfolio Holder for Planning and Regulation at Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council, Cllr Richard Smith, said:

“We are very grateful for all the feedback we have received through this process. We said we wanted to hear the views in detail of local people, including other organisations and developers, and we were delighted to receive around 100 responses to the document we published in June setting out our ‘preferred options’.

“We heard from people who say we are allowing too many new homes as well as people who say we are not allowing enough. We have heard from businesses who want clarity about where investment is welcome and from residents concerned about important issues in their locality. We also have important matters from government that we need to resolve before we can go any further.

“As a result of all of this, officers have set out a revised timetable for the committee to consider. We will discuss this in the Borough Plan committee. We want the best possible future for our Borough that will make it a great place to live, work and visit.

“The Borough Plan is an important document because it helps set the framework within which changes to the open space, roads, land and buildings in our borough can take place. The document has to be approved by the Planning Inspector at the end of the day, so we want to get this right. That’s why we are recommending we take a bit more time to complete the work that is needed.”
