Security system foils fuel theft attempt at council depot

Published on Monday, 4th April 2022

Fuel theft attempt thwarted at Gresham Road depot.

An attempted fuel theft from Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council depot failed as security systems prevented the crime.

Motion-sensitive CCTV picked up images of intruders making their way across the site at Gresham Road, alerting police and security to attend.

As a result, paraphernalia associated with syphoning fuel, including pipes and containers were found abandoned on site yesterday, Sunday.

A small amount of fuel was taken, but the prompt response helped ensure the operation wasn’t successful.

Kevin Hollis, director of public services at Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council, said:

“Other council depots in the region are reporting similar incidents, presumably linked to the price hike that we have all seen in fuel costs in recent weeks.

“Security measures are in place and they have prevented thieves escaping with the amount of fuel they would have been hoping for.

“We will continue to monitor other safeguards and preventative measures that might be needed, but it is good to see those we currently have in place have been effective.”

Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council is working with Warwickshire police and regular patrols will be carried out.
