Borough Council announces death of former Mayor Brian Hawkes

It is with great sadness that Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council announces that former Borough Mayor Brian Hawkes has died after bravely battling a long illness.

Mr Hawkes, of Bedworth, was Borough Mayor during the Civic year of 2014/15 and during his term in office his Mayoress was Diana, his wife.

She was a former Mayor herself in 2000/1 and Mr Hawkes became the first person to hold both the role of Mayor and Consort.

He also served as Chairman of North Warwickshire and Bedworth Labour Party, and was a long standing member of Bedworth Armistice Committee.

Mr Hawkes represented the Heath the ward on the Borough Council and was also a former Warwickshire County Councillor, representing the Bedworth West ward for Labour.

He was a Chartered Member of the Institute of Safety and Health, and was well known for his after dinner speeches recalling some of the “highlights” of his time dealing with health and safety issues.

The council extends its deepest sympathy to Mr Hawkes’ family at this difficult time.

The Borough Flag will fly at half mast on the day of the funeral, which is yet to be announced.

Council leader Cllr Kristofer Wilson said: “I was very sad to hear this news. The Borough has lost a good servant, and the Borough Council has reason to be extremely grateful for his long service.”
