Singing star Matt Ford’s vocal workshops at The Civic Hall in Bedworth came to a swinging conclusion with the Mayor’s voice of approval

Nuneaton born Matt bought his seven-week Swing Era vocal workshop aimed at over 65's to the High Street venue and they proved to be a resounding success.

And the grand finale saw participants joined by a three-piece band to sing a selection of swing standards in front of an audience which included Cllr Rob Tromans, Mayor of Nuneaton and Bedworth.

Matt said:

“It was a tremendous conclusion and great to see how much our singers’ confidence had grown over the period and it really was a fantastic afternoon.

“We engaged with this group of over 65's to help rebuild and strengthen their mental wellbeing, self-esteem and self-confidence through learning and developing artistic skills.

“By its nature music is inclusive, and the shared experience of working towards a common goal, this week’s concert, served to build much needed social bonds between participants.

“They were also delighted to be able to perform in front of an audience which included our Mayor.’’

Cllr Rob Tromans, Mayor of Nuneaton and Bedworth, said:

“Well done Matt! A great initiative and one that was enjoyed by performers and audience alike, clearly, these workshops have benefited all those involved.

I’m glad Matt chose to bring SingSwingSing to the Borough and its great that our own Civic Hall was able to accommodate these workshops, post Covid, improving people’s wellbeing is going to be a big challenge, so I commend anyone who runs or takes part in this type of event.”

Participation was open to all Nuneaton and Bedworth residents over the age of 65, and participants were chosen by Matt from those responding to advertisements in local newspaper and on Facebook or information provided through local radio.

Singers chose the song they were focusing on in the sessions, and non-singing participants provided an audience and moral support.

Each week they attended the Civic Hall in Bedworth where they received 20 minutes of stylistic tuition from Matt accompanied by pianist Matthew Regan and were given a professionally recorded, piano accompaniment backing track for home practice.

There was no cost to the participants - SingSwingSing was funded by Arts Council England through their National Lottery Project Grants.

The Civic Hall will continue to operate as the principal Covid-19 vaccination centre for Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough throughout the summer, with the programme of entertainment events suspended until further notice.
