Nuneaton town centre gains £13 million-plus grant boost

The Government has confirmed that Nuneaton and Bedworth will benefit from £13 million-plus additional investment to boost the regeneration of Nuneaton town centre.

Nuneaton is one of more than a number of UK towns and cities to receive cash from the Future High Streets Fund awarded today by Whitehall’s Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) in a statement by Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, Richard Jenrick.

Today’s announcement comes after Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council was shortlisted by the government last year with a provisional grant of around £1 million announced over Christmas. Then the Council was asked to present a detailed business case for its vision for the future of Nuneaton town centre, in order to secure the amount announced today.

As a result, Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council and its partners will now work to deliver their detailed, final proposals for investing a total grant of £13.3 million in a series of projects linked to new homes, shops, workspaces and public open space within Nuneaton.

Support from MHCLG will enable the Council to work with partners to transform locations as part of the Abbey Street Development, provide further security for town centre sites against the threat of flooding, and help delivery of new town centre homes in the Borough Council’s ambitious ‘Bridge to Living’ scheme. In doing so, it will help deliver the Transforming Nuneaton Vision.

Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council leader Cllr Kristofer Wilson said: “We are here to breathe new life into our town centres in Nuneaton and Bedworth, and this shows that our Borough is open for business.

“This local authority has worked extremely hard with partners to convince Government of the merit of the various schemes that will benefit from this funding, over many months.

“We look forward to working with our partners and Government on delivering the very best outcomes and unlocking the potential that our town has.

“This announcement is further evidence that Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council can bring forward major investment projects like this one, for the benefit of everyone who lives, works, visits and invests here.

“Transforming Nuneaton is a bold initiative, and we believe our vision, ambition and aspiration provides a clear way forward that will bring benefits for the whole borough over many years to come.”
