Socially distanced singing workshops at The Civic

Swing star Matt Ford bringing vocal workshop to The Civic Hall in Bedworth

Local lad Matt Ford is returning to the Civic Hall in Bedworth with a socially distanced swing spectacular.

He will be bringing SingSwingSing a seven-week Swing Era vocal workshop aimed at over 65's to the High Street venue from Tuesday, 1 June, 2021.

Matt, who has performed at many of the country’s major venues, and regularly headlines sell-out concerts at The Civic Hall, said:

“The songs of the Swing and Big Band era touch everyone regardless of creed or religious beliefs.

“The over 65's make up 18% of the population and yet according to a recent Office for National Statistics survey, more than 50% of those in this age group have expressed feelings of loneliness and social isolation.

“My aim is to engage with a group of over 65's to help rebuild and strengthen their mental wellbeing, self-esteem and self-confidence through learning and developing artistic skills.

“By its nature music is inclusive, and the shared experience of working towards a common goal, the week seven concert on Tuesday, 13 July, will serve to build much needed social bonds between participants.’’

Participation is open to all Nuneaton and Bedworth residents over the age of 65, participants are chosen by Matt from those responding to advertisements in local newspaper and on Facebook or information provided through local radio.

There will be eight singing and eight non-singing participants, the singers will choose the song they will be focusing on in the sessions and the eight non-singing participants provide an audience and moral support and it is hoped that they will form the next group of singers.

Each week the participants attend the Civic Hall in Bedworth where they will each receive 20 minutes of stylistic tuition from Matt accompanied by pianist Matthew Regan.

Singing participants are given a professionally recorded, piano accompaniment backing track for home practice.

And in week seven, Covid restrictions allowing, a larger audience will be invited to watch and support the singing participants in a final show of their work.  For this they will be accompanied by a trio (piano/bass/drums).

There is no cost to the participants - SingSwingSing is wholly funded by Arts Council England through their National Lottery Project Grants.
