Safety checks help avoid major fire at Nuneaton sports centre

Fire crews from Nuneaton and Leamington were called to a fire at the Jubilee Sports Centre in Nuneaton late on Tuesday night, January 19.

Minimal damage was caused at the Greenmoor Road building which is owned  by Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council and operated by the authority’s leisure partner “Everyone Active.’’

No one was hurt during the incident, with smoke damage caused to the inside of the building and the front doors have been covered with wooden panels.

A council spokesman said initial investigations suggest the blaze was caused by an electrical fault in the building’s electrical cupboard, but this will be investigated over coming days and the fire door to the cupboard contained the fire.

Daily building checks, carried out due to the facility being closed for COVID restrictions, undertaken by “Everyone Active” spotted the incident.

Their quick actions helped keep the incident to minor damage, that leisure  chiefs are aware of at this early stage.

Councillor Ian Lloyd Portfolio Holder for Arts and Leisure said:

“The procedures put in place and quick thinking of an “Everyone Active’’ employee have helped us keep the damage to a minimum.

“I would like to thank that employee and our partners at Warwickshire Fire and Rescue for their response to the fire.’’

Five Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service crews were at the Jubilee Sports Centre last night with one remaining on Wednesday morning. (January 20).
