Published on Friday, 22nd May 2020

"We are all very saddened by Bill Olner’s passing. He spent over two decades at NBBC, he was hardworking and cared a lot about Nuneaton especially."

Cllr Bill Olner sadly passed away on Monday 18 May at George Eliot Hospital. Bill was Nuneaton’s Member of Parliament for 18 years, from 1992 until 2010. He also served on Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council for a total of 21 years.

He was elected leader of NBBC in 1982 and held this post for 5 years. Bill then served as the Mayor of the Borough in 1987.

In 2013, Bill joined Warwickshire County Council, and he was also a strong advocate for the Transforming Nuneaton programme.

Up until his passing, Bill was Chair of WCC’s Regulatory Committee and a member of the Resources and Fire and Rescue Overview and Scrutiny Committee.

Cllr Julie Jackson, Leader of Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council said:

“We are all very saddened by Bill Olner’s passing. He spent over two decades at NBBC, he was hardworking and cared a lot about Nuneaton especially. Bill was a great friend to many, as well as a great person to work with. He will be deeply missed and our thoughts are with his family during this time.”

Arrangements are in hand to fly the flag at half-mast on the Town Hall on the day of the funeral, and for a minute’s silence to take place at the next Cabinet meeting, as a mark of respect, and in line with Council protocol.
