Marking V.E Day with the Museum at Home

Published on Monday, 4th May 2020

As our visitors can’t come to us, Nuneaton Museum & Art Gallery will bring a V.E. Day themed fortnight to our #museumathome offerings and there will be something for all ages from May 4 – May 17 2020.

Monday 4 May will see the museum’s first online exhibition launched.  Explore the resilience of the British people through a trying time in our local history, as we present Blitzed, our planned exhibition now available to view in our new virtual reality white gallery.

The impact of the Second World War was felt by everyone in the Borough. However it was the air raids that brought the war to the doorsteps of local people. 75 years on from the Blitz, our online edition of Blitzed exhibition gives viewers the opportunity to examine never before seen photographs from the Museum’s Collection.

With detailed images revealing the significant aftermath of air raids on the region, visitors can gain a picture of what happened to Nuneaton during World War II and appreciate the rebuilding that created the town we love today.

This will be an online version of an exhibition which we very much hope you will be able to visit later this year.

For younger visitors there will be lots of wartime themed makes accessible from : www.nuneatonandbedworth.gov.uk/museum-at-home. Also there will be an exclusive Storytelling for Under 5s with a  ‘Make Do & Mend theme’ on the museum’s YouTube site on Wednesday 13 May.

You’ll be able to find out more about the museum building and Nuneaton College of Art during wartime in our special blog.

Our #isolationcreation will have a wartime theme as will our next online jigsaw.  You’ll also be able to see many of the wartime objects on our Instagram feed, including finding out the impact of the blitz on George Eliot’s legacy.

On Friday 8 May the actual V.E Day we are delighted to be posting our first ‘Collections Chat’ on our youtube channel. Once a fortnight, our Curator will be introducing an object from the Museum’s collection. This week it is a very special oil painting showing the VE Night celebrations in Nuneaton.

The fortnight will close with a filmed talk by Mathew Johnson followed by Q&A session on zoom.  Check out facebook to find out how you can take part.

It looks like its going to be a packed two weeks!

“Its sad that so many plans to commemorate V.E Day have had to be cancelled, but its great that these activities will still enable us all to mark this important occasion.”
