Adding, changing or removing a property name

If a property is already numbered, the property owner can add, change or remove the name of their property without contacting the Council. Any new name should not conflict with any existing property names in the locality.

However, the property number must still be displayed as this is a legal obligation and must be referred to in all correspondence.

Should you wish for the property name to be recorded as part of your official postal address, or to remove or change a name previously recorded for your address then please apply to the street naming and numbering service. Please note that charges apply.

How to make an application

Send us your fee together with a 1:1250 plan with your application. Each entrance to be numbered should be indicated on the plan with a red arrow.

You will need the freeholder's permission before any change to the name or number of a building.

How long will it take

Once all relevant information has been provided, a decision on buildings for naming and/or renumbering will be given within 28 days.

For larger sites containing new streets and numbers, both public and private, this may take longer depending on its complexity and volume.

Fees and charges

The following fees and charges apply:

  • Street naming per street: £148
  • Property numbering - up to 10 Numbers: £148
  • More than 10 numbers - per number: £15
  • Renaming of an existing street: £435
  • House naming/renaming: £72

Why do we need street naming and numbering

The address of a property is important for postal deliveries and the emergency services.

It ensures the emergency services can find a property quickly; mail is delivered efficiently; and provides reliable delivery locations for retail, online shopping and utility companies.

Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council has the legal responsibility for the creation of new addresses under the provision of The Public Health Act 1925, Sections 17-19 and the Towns Improvement Clauses Act 1847, Sections 64 and 65.
