The council has no responsibility for maintaining drains or sewers and will make a charge for clearing them. The responsibility lies with the owner of the building using them.
A sewer clearance service is operated by the Council however a charge is made for clearance of private drains and sewers. If no one wishes to take responsibility then the Council can serve a 48 hour notice requiring the owners(s) to unblock the pipe.
An out of hours service is available for emergency unblocking at an additional cost. Where pipes are damaged or continually blocked, the Council may investigate and seek to ensure the owners repair the pipes. Often these are shared pipes and the Council may need to serve notices on owners and carry out the works if those owners do not comply.
Advice will be given if requested as the ownership of sewer pipes is often unclear and difficult for owners to establish.
