Welcome Home 258 Signal Squadron

Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council Crest
The 3rd Division and Signal Regiment (258 Signal Squadron), which is based at Bramcote, arrive home this month following a lengthy service in Afghanistan.

On Friday, June 24 2011 the squadron’s troops are to take part in a Welcome Home Parade in Nuneaton town centre

During the parade, the Freedom of Entry will be conferred on the squadron by the Council.  This will be a reaffirmation of the Freedom which was previously awarded to the squadron when it existed under a different name.

The squadron will begin its parade from Dugdale Street at 11am, walking through Queens Road into the town centre and stopping outside the Town Hall at approximately 11.15am.

Following this, the troops will march around Coton Road roundabout and back into the town centre via Coventry Street, Abbey Street, Stratford Street and back onto Queens Road.

There will be some traffic disruption between 8am and 2pm with some road closures during that period.  The timings may vary, but below are the planned restrictions:

  • Victoria Street, Dugdale Street, Queens Road at junction with Dugdale Street – there will be no street parking available from 7am and the roads will be closed between 10.30-11.05am
  • Coventry Street, Mill Street, Coton Road (Coventry Street to the Rope Walk car park exit) – there will be no street parking available from 7am and these roads will be closed to traffic between 10.30-midday
  • Coton Road from the Rope Walk car park exit to and including the Roanne Ringway/Vicarage Street roundabout – there will be no street parking available from 7am and the road will be closed for up to 10 minutes at approximately 11.40am and then again at approximately 11.50am
  • All road closures will be clear shortly after midday with parking restrictions lifted by 2pm

Mayor of Nuneaton and Bedworth, Councillor Neil Phillips, said:
“This is a wonderful opportunity for the people of Nuneaton and Bedworth to take to the streets to show their appreciation for our brave servicemen and women.  I would encourage residents both young and old to attend the parade to wave flags and applaud the squadron for the courage and determination they display in conflicts around the world.”

Major Jim Knight, MBE Royal Signals, said:
“The men and women of 258 Signal Squadron are very much looking forward to the opportunity to march through the town of Nuneaton.  The parade will be a fitting end to our six month deployment, which has seen troops from the Squadron deployed to Kabul, Kandahar and Helmand province.  Knowing we have the support of our families and the people of Nuneaton and Bedworth has meant a considerable amount to us whilst we have been deployed on operations this year.”
