Walking the Talk in George Eliot Country
This year marks the 150th anniversary of “Scenes of Clerical Life”, the first work of fiction published by Nuneaton-born writer, George Eliot. As part of a series of events celebrating the anniversary, special “Scenes Revisited” walking tours of Nuneaton have been organised to give those who enjoy a good walk a fresh perspective on the hidden history of Nuneaton and its famous authoress.
While Nuneaton has changed greatly over the years, with an expert guide you can discover the local buildings and places which inspired George Eliot’s writing. These free walking tours, taking place at 2pm on Sunday 27th May and again on Sunday 3rd June, will be about 2 miles in length (lasting approximately 1h30m) and start from Nuneaton Library & Information Centre. The pace will be gentle, providing walkers with a chance to take in Nuneaton’s “Scenes”.
Both walks have been organised by The George Eliot Fellowship and the Scenes Revisited Partnership. A Heritage Lottery Funded “Scenes Revisited” festival of celebrations (including talks, cycle tours, family activities, musical concerts and more) is also planned for the autumn – so watch this space over the next few months if you want to find out about more events and activities relating to George Eliot in the local area.
